Sublime Sydney

February 1, 2010

In July 2004, I visited sublime Sydney, Australia. I call it that because it did inspire awe and admiration through it’s grandeur and beauty as a city. It was quite cold (winter then) and I missed the 4th of July in the US, but I did go on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb.

Climbing 134m into the sky on top of the world’s largest steel-arch bridge was a huge accomplishment for me since I had just been diagnosed with MS in May and was still suffering some side effects. I thought I might never be able to do something like that again. But, thank God, I could do it TODAY if I was there. I would still be able to. That is something to be so thankful for!

SYDNEY TOWER BRIDGE

In Sydney, there are walkways and paths and beaches all around the harbour with boats to take you wherever you want to go. Even the zoo!

FRIEND I MET ALONG THE WAY

One of my favorite pictures is from my trip to Sydney…recognize it?
I have the above picture printed in black and white in my house and I just love the architecture of the Opera House. You can look at it from so many different angles and see something different each time.

STATE OF ORIGIN

Another pretty cool picture I took is from the State of Origin game between Queensland and New South Wales at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium.  My focus in this picture is, of course, the impressive Olympic Stadium rather than the game.

Of interest: The State of Origin is a series of Australian rugby league football matches (best of three) between the Maroons (representing the state of Queensland) and the Blues (representing the state of New South Wales).

This great rivalry is a grand sports event in which players are selected to represent the state in which they played their first senior football (hence the name ‘state of origin’). I’ll have to say, I’d never been to a game quite like this and I understood it so much better by being there in person, rather than watching in on TV.

CITY OF SYDNEY

A tree that reaches past your embrace grows from one small seed.

A structure over nine stories high begins with a handful of earth.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
